Frequently Asked Questions
What is Botox?
Botox is a large protein molecule that we use to relax the muscles under a wrinkle.
By relaxing the muscle the skin over the muscle is not folded as much and the wrinkle generally fills in over time.
It has many other effects and is used for considerably more things than wrinkle reduction.
Botox will greatly reduce excessive sweating on the hands and underarms.
It can reduce or relieve some tension headaches.
Botox is used to correct some forms of double vision.
Botox is used to treat muscle spasms in persons with spinal cord or brain injuries.
It can treat some forms of pelvic pain.
The spasms and pain from an anal fissure can be treated with Botox.
It is the single most common cosmetic medical procedure done in this country today.
Is it expensive?
Somewhat.
We think our prices are comparable to others providing similar services.
We charge now $12.50 per unit of botox. If you purchase Botox with another procedure we charge $10.00 per unit.
A forehead generally takes 20 units on your first does.
The area between your eyebrows will usually take 12-20 units depending on how deep your wrinkles are and how far up they run.
Are the changes permanent?
No.
Botox the first time you use it will last anywhere from 4-8 months, maybe longer.
With each subsequent dose the muscles will atrophy (get thinner and weaker).
This will make the effect last longer each time .
If you use the medication regularly it can last up to a year before the area needs to be retreated.
Isn't Botox a poison?
Yes.
Botox by weight is one of the most potent poisons we know of.
Aspirin too is a poison.
One aspirin can save your life if taken at the start of a heart attack.
Two thousand aspirin tablets can kill you.
it would take about $36,000 to get enough commercial Botox into your system to cause death.
A 'usual dose' of botox in our clinic is $300-$500 a very low and very safe amount.
